Challenge
The Siekierki combined-heat-and-power plant supplies a large share of Warsaw’s energy and relies on an intensive rail service for moving feedstocks and finished products. The public roads leading to the plant’s siding included level crossings that lacked modern signalling devices, which increased the risk of collisions and limited traffic control. A comprehensive upgrade was therefore essential to eliminate hazards, meet current safety standards and safeguard uninterrupted energy deliveries.
Solution
All four crossings were fully modernised by installing automatic warning systems equipped with light and sound signals, train-detection technology that activates the warnings precisely when a train approaches and a CCTV network that streams real-time images to the control centre. The works were staged so that both rail and road traffic continued without interruption, and the newly installed equipment was seamlessly integrated into the plant’s traffic-management system.

SUMMARY

The project raised safety standards in a strategically important area of energy infrastructure, ensuring smooth rail transport and better service for road users. The technologies applied laid the foundation for the further development of intelligent safety systems in the future.
