Challenge
The rail siding in Płock is the logistical backbone of the refinery, handling both inbound feedstocks and outbound finished products. The existing signalling and traffic-control system no longer met modern technical or regulatory standards, which increased the risk of failures and limited operational efficiency. A comprehensive upgrade was required to achieve full traffic control, enhance safety and enable future infrastructure development.
Solution
The project replaced outdated equipment with state-of-the-art, digitally integrated systems. New cable routes were installed, legacy signals were replaced with LED units, and wheel sensors were fitted to provide continuous train detection. All works were staged so that rail operations could continue without interruption, thereby minimising the impact on day-to-day refinery activities.

Summary

The upgrade has measurably increased the reliability and efficiency of PKN ORLEN’s rail operations. The new technology raises traffic-control standards, ensures regulatory compliance and creates a robust platform for future logistical requirements.
