Challenge
Rising energy demand and changing consumer preferences place greater strain on LV networks built in the 1970s. Costly MV/LV transformers are especially prone to overloading, so protecting them against faults and excessive currents was critical. Modern networks also require full automation that eliminates manual intervention during re-configuration. All works had to be completed within one day—even with a full network shutdown—to minimise inconvenience for residents.
Solution
To meet these challenges we installed new LV switchboards and equipped LV cable connectors with over-current protection, enabling proper FDIR operation. The system detects and identifies faults, then automatically connects reserve lines to avoid supply interruptions. It also continuously monitors transformer loading, preventing overloading. If a transformer approaches its limit, the system automatically transfers load to a reserve unit, maintaining safe operation of the affected section.

Summary

Modernising the LV network in the selected part of Łódź’s Retkinia estate posed substantial challenges. Thanks to meticulous planning and tight coordination, all objectives were achieved. The project substantially improved network performance and significantly enhanced transformer protection against adverse incidents.
